Making a family time capsule

By Phil Wiley

can be a great activity to involve all the family. Time capsules can include all sorts of things… so fill it up with photos, trinkets and treasures and store it for years or even save it for a future generation!

Making a family time capsule is quite simple. You need a container to be your capsule – choose one that is water proof, air tight and preferably fire proof as well.

Decide where you want to put your family time capsule and for how long you want to hide it away. Make sure you store it somewhere you won’t lose or forget it if you move house.

The next step is to ask every member of your family to put something into the family time capsule. This can be anything – money, photographs, toys – as long as it fits into the container.

One nice idea is to have each family member write a letter to place in the family time capsule – either to their future selves or someone in a future generation.

Don’t forget – it’s very important to protect the contents of your family time capsule from decay. Make sure you seal each individual item in airtight plastic bags and store the time capsule in a cool, dry place. If you’re unsure how to store photographs talk to your local photography store.

There are some things that can cause decay to other contents and should be left out of your family time capsule – these include any food or other perishables, wood, wool, rubber and pvc. Also, if you plan to seal your family time capsule for more than a generation make sure that you include instructions on how to use anything you include – DVD’s, video tapes and cds well may be a thing of the past in 100 years or so!
